Man of Steel 2 will make a villain of Superman or Batman

Make no mistake: Warner Bros has pulled off a huge coup with its announcement at this weekend's Comic-Con that the next Man of Steel movie will feature Superman battling Batman. Even with rival studio Marvel using San Diego's annual fanboy Mecca to reveal the title (and antagonist) of the next Avengers film, it is the news that Kal-El and the caped crusader will be squaring off that has caught the imagination of public and media alike. That's some feat when you consider that Marvel's comic book ensemble was by far the biggest film of 2012 at the global box office, while Man of Steel hasn't yet passed the haul taken by the fourth Spider-Man movie and got a lukewarm thumbs up from critics.

Director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David S Goyer now face the daunting task of transforming what on paper sounds like a dream superhero smackdown into a movie that not only continues telling the story of the new Superman but delivers a fresh Batman capable of spinning off into his own adventures AND joining Warner's promised Justice League movie (which will unite the pair with Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern).

Any Superman v Batman story must be handled extremely carefully, not least because of the disparity between the two superheroes' abilities. The Dark Knight might be the more popular cinematic superhero in these more cynical times, but Bruce Wayne cannot hold a candle to the last son of Krypton when it comes to actual superpowers. While Batman has all the wealth of Wayne's billions to help him fight crime, Superman is a godlike creature from another planet whose physical stature is exaggerated a thousand times in Earth's environment. He can fly, is virtually invulnerable, has powerful heat vision and can move faster than sound. A straight fight between the pair would be like a face-off between and elephant and a gnat.

In the comic books where the two characters have battled it out, writers have often imagined a scenario where Wayne used his fortune to get hold of some Kryptonite, Superman's only real weakness. In perhaps the pair's most famous battle, in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, Superman even gets blown up with a nuclear weapon – yet still somehow comes out just about on top.

Snyder has hinted that he will use the antipathy between the pair in Miller's comic as the basis for his new film. The potential problem here is that the Batman of The Dark Knight Returns veers into antihero territory in a way that Christopher Nolan's big screen iteration never did. In his 1986 limited series, Miller brilliantly contrasts a shallow and self-centred, increasingly wrinkly and jaded caped crusader with a Kal-El who remains youthful, noble and good-hearted – yet as boring as dry toast for dinner. Snyder and his team will need to tread a more considered path, giving the spat between the pair enough spiky venom to make for fun viewing without belittling either. Batman, in particular, needs to maintain the vital humanity with which Nolan imbued Christian Bale's version if audiences are to care about his future battles to save Gotham. Moreover, these two are going to have to kiss and make up if Warner's plan for a Justice League movie in 2017 is to come to fruition.

Nevertheless, the studio's decision to start its drive towards an Avengers-like ensemble superhero movie by introducing a new Batman into the Man of Steel universe makes a lot of sense. The other members of the Justice League remain superpowered twinkles in the studio's eye (bar The Green Lantern, who's more of an unattractive snot-like stain after the debacle of Martin Campbell's 2011 non-event). Warner needs at least one film to begin introducing its lineup of masked crime fighters – and doing it this way avoids any accusation that the studio has simply purloined Marvel's hugely successful blueprint (which involved giving each hero his own movie before teaming them up in The Avengers).

Might we also hear rumblings of other members of the team? There are rumours of a Flash film sometime before Justice League arrives, and Superman is in the perfect position to investigate the appearance of other super-powered types via his alter ego Clark Kent's new position as a Daily Planet reporter. Imagine if Wonder Woman et al began popping up on his journalistic radar one by one …

It looks like Nolan will have very little involvement in Man of Steel 2, which is probably a good thing bearing in mind his attachment to the most recent screen incarnation of Batman. But Warner will be throwing everything else in its coffers at the new movie. This weekend's Comic-Con proved that superhero flicks are here to stay, and yet the stakes rise all the time. Superman v Batman has the chance to be the genre's most successful film yet, and might even challenge the likes of Avatar for box office "pow" if Snyder gets it right. In many ways it is too big to fail. In years to come we could be talking about this film as the moment the genre went truly stratospheric – or faced its very own Kryptonite.

Tampa woman swallows diamond at charity luncheon

TAMPA — They say diamonds are a girl's best friend. But a guest at a recent fashion show fundraiser might give that distinction to her gastroenterologist.

Miriam Tucker was one of hundreds of women sipping champagne at Fashionollia on April 20, staged for the 65th year by the Tampa Woman's Club.

It cost $20 for a glass of the bubbly — and a chance to win a 1.03-carat diamond. Continental Wholesale Diamond plunked a single stone, a round brilliant cut beauty appraised at $5,000, into one champagne flute. All the rest got cubic zirconias.

The luncheon concluded without any ecstatic shriek from one of the 280 women in the ballroom of the Renaissance Hotel International Plaza. Event organizers and jewelers Andy Meyer and Joy Pierson were puzzled.

"We knew the winner had to be at one of two tables," Pierson said. She was hovering in that vicinity when Tucker, 80, spoke up.

"I thought I'd drink a bit of champagne so I didn't have to stick my finger so far into the glass," said Tucker, a retired real estate broker. "We were laughing and talking when I realized I swallowed it. What a dumb thing."

Meanwhile, roving jewelers, armed with probes and a loupe, examined each stone. Tucker, assuming event organizers would announce a winner at any minute, chose not to draw attention to herself.

Until the room was near empty. Then she confessed.

"She said she swallowed what was in her glass," Pierson said, "but as luck would have it, she was scheduled for a colonoscopy in two days."

That wasn't good enough for Fashionollia chairwoman Gina Roth who insisted Tucker, who lives in South Tampa, follow her to St, Joseph's Hospital for an X-ray.

The diamond didn't show up on the X-ray, so Tucker prepped for her colonoscopy as planned. But as far as she could tell, the diamond remained stuck in her body.

Early the next morning, she alerted Dr. Bruce Edgerton "to be on lookout," briefing him on the case of the missing diamond.

During Tucker's examination, the doctor struck, well, a diamond. With the stone in a biohazard bag, Tucker's daughter drove straight to the jewelry store.

The jewelers confirmed Tucker's bling was the real thing. She took her prize home, cleaned, polished, sparkling.

As my son says, "All's well that ends well," Tucker said.

Champions for Children was the luncheon beneficiary.

16 human body facts – Heart Lungs Blood vessels and Senses

A known phrase amongst medical students claims that the more you know – the more you understand how little you know. And so, hundreds of years in researching managed to discover amazing human body facts. We managed to discovered about the mystery that floats over the non stop working machine. from birth to death, here are 60 human body facts.

Heart, Lungs and Blood vessels:

1. Squirting high: The human heart is pumping with enormous pressure, capable of squirting blood up to 9 meters high. No wonder you can feel your heartbeats. It never stops and sends blood against gravity up to the head, and at the same time down to the rest of your body parts.

2. 100,000km: The length of your blood vessels is about 100,000km. To understand this distance – the circumference of earth is about 40,000km. The distance between the earth the moon is about 300,000km. So if we take the blood vessels of 3 people, and connect them edge to edge – we could easily step where Neil Armstrong did.

3.  Women’s heart beat faster than men’s: The main reason for this is that women’s hearts tends to be a bit small than men’s, but needs to pump the same amount of blood to the body parts, in the same amount of time.

4.  The left lung is smaller than the right: This is to make room for the heart. most people has a heart that tends to lean to the left, which pushes the left lung.

5.  You can live without a significant amount of inner organs: The human body may seem fragile, but it can definitely live without the stomach, the spline, 75% of the liver, 80% of the intestines, one kidney, one lung and any productive organ. It wouldn’t feel so great, and you’ll have to be under medication – but it won’t kill you.

6.  Saliva at 160kph: During a sneeze the spit particles can reach up to 160kph. the sneeze is very dangerous while driving – there is no way of sneezing with your eyes open, which caused a few road accidents already.

7.  Who snores more?: 60% of men and 40% of women up to the age of 60 snore. In most cases a snore can reach 60 decibels. but some people can even reach 80 decibels – same as a concrete drill.

Senses:

1.  Who will blink first?: Women blink twice as much as men. The average person blinks around 13 times a minute. Blinking is very important to the eye’s health: It helps cover the eye with liquid that has enzymes and Lubricating fluid, that protects it.

2.  The strongest: The outer muscles that moves the eye ball are the strongest muscles in the body, relative to the amount of strength they require: They are stronger 100 times than needed.

3.  Blue, but temporary: Many babies are born with blue eyes, but they wont stay that way for long. The reason for that is the pigment called “Melanin” that sometimes sinks in the eyes cornea after birth. This process require exposure to ultraviolet light, which in the end reveals the child’s real eye color.

4.  Remember 50,000 scents: Our nose can remember 50,000 different smells, many of them are burnt into our memory for many years. but that’s nothing compared to men’s best friend – the dog’s nose is sensitive 1,000,000 times more than ours.

5.  The last to go: The last sense that disconnects while dying is the sense of hearing. The first one being eye vision, followed by taste, smell and touch.

6.  See for a distance: The longest distance that you can gaze into without any help is about 2.4 million light years – 225 trillion kilometers. This is the distance to the Andromeda galaxy, which you can see in bright sky.

7.  Noise sensitive: The smallest noise can make our pupils dilate - this is one of the reasons why surgeons are bothered by noise - dilation of the pupil might cause to be blinded with light , that can cause a disaster.

8.  From birth to old age: Our eyes stay the same size from the moment we are born until we are old age, but the ears and nose does not stop growing. That is why if someone did a nose surgery when he was young – you can see his nose changing over the years.

9.  The strongest organ in our body is the tongue: You may not able to lift weights with it, but relative to it’s size, this is the strongest muscle in body that works almost nonstop by talking, eating and swallowing.

Street protests spread chaos across Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 11 (UPI) -- Protesters brought Brazil's main highways nearly to a standstill amid persistent public anger over alleged misuse of public funds and neglect of basic services.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff faces a sharp drop in her approval ratings amid allegations the government has lavished funds on controversial prestige projects that should go toward poverty reduction and improving public services.

The prestige projects include multibillion-dollar sprucing up of the country's exterior image before next year's FIFA World Cup tournament and the Olympics in 2016. Critics accuse the government of turning a blind eye to mass-scale misappropriations, delays in projects and cronyism.

The government says the expenditure is necessary to prepare Brazil for the two international events. Media reports cite shortfalls in necessary infrastructural renewal, including hotel room shortages.

Rousseff launched a major anti-corruption drive last year amid charges of misrule by her predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and his alleged cronies, but the campaign has been derailed as renewed allegations emerge of widespread graft under her own presidency.

Tens of thousands of protesters turned out for Thursday's demonstrations, with protesters and traffic clogging major highways in at least seven states, officials said.

Protest leaders called the turnout a "national struggle day." Although the main protests were orchestrated by trade unions, many other organizations joined in.

Access to the Santos port, the largest in South America, was blocked by protesters for a second day.

The country's heavily congested ports suffered more setbacks in authorities' desperate bid to clear a backlog that has spread panic among traders. Exporters fear they face huge losses as merchandise remains unshipped.

Disruptions were reported in hospitals and some schools remained shut. Public transport systems in many areas outside Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo were hit, leaving thousands more who didn't join the protests stranded in roads and at railway stations.

As the protests spread, demands have widened, too. Protesters want specific action on improving infrastructure, reducing income disparities and agricultural reforms that can lift farmers out of chronic poverty.

Analysts say income disparities have worsened with rising inflation.

IMF data show emerging markets including Brazil face slowing growth. The IMF cut its global growth forecast for 2013 to a "subdued" 3.1 percent and for emerging economies to 5 percent from 5.3 percent.

The outlook for Brazil has gone down to 2.5 percent from 3.4 percent.

Critics say the slow growth forecast is another reason for the Rousseff administration to be more cautious with public spending.

Crew tried to abort landing before San Francisco air crash

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 that crashed at San Francisco's airport on Saturday was flying "significantly below" its intended speed and its crew tried to abort the landing less than two seconds before it hit a seawall in front of the runway, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said on Sunday.

Asiana Airlines said the pilot in charge of landing the Boeing 777 on Saturday, Lee Kang-kook, was training for the long-range plane and it was his first flight to that airport with the jet. Asiana Airlines said he had previously flown to San Francisco on different planes and was being assisted by another pilot more experienced with the Boeing 777.

Information collected from the plane's cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder indicated that there were no signs of trouble until seven seconds before impact, when the crew tried to accelerate, NTSB Chairwoman Deborah Hersman said at a news conference at the airport.

A stall warning in which the cockpit controls begin to shake activated four seconds before impact, and the crew tried to abort the landing and initiate what is known as a "go around" maneuver 1.5 seconds before crashing, Hersman said.

"Air speed was significantly below the target air speed" of 137 knots, she said. The throttle was set at idle as the plane approached the airport and the "engines appear to respond normally" when the crew tried to gain speed in the seconds before the crash, Hersman said.

Two Chinese teenagers died in the incident and more than 180 people were injured, local officials said. In a tragic new twist, the San Francisco Fire Department said that one of the teenagers may have been run over by an emergency vehicle as first responders scrambled to the scene.

"One of the deceased did have injuries consistent with those of having been run over by a vehicle," fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said. "Many agencies were on the field yesterday."

Autopsies to determine the cause of death will be conducted by the San Mateo County coroner's office, officials said.

More than 30 people remained hospitalized late on Sunday. Eight were listed in critical condition, including two with paralysis from spinal injuries, according to hospital officials.

The charred hulk of the aircraft remained on the airport tarmac as flight operations gradually returned to normal. Three of the four runways were operating by Sunday afternoon.

Hersman said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the crash. The data recorders corroborated witness accounts and an amateur video, shown by CNN, that indicated the plane came in too low, lifted its nose in an attempt to gain altitude, and then bounced violently along the tarmac after the rear of the aircraft clipped a seawall at the approach to the runway.

Asked whether the information reviewed by the NTSB showed pilot error in the crash, Hersman did not answer directly.

"What I will tell you is that the NTSB conducts very thorough investigations. We will not reach a determination of probable cause in the first few days that we're on an accident scene," she told reporters.

Asiana said mechanical failure did not appear to be a factor in the crash. Hersman confirmed that a part of the airport's instrument-landing system was offline on Saturday as part of a scheduled runway construction project, but cautioned against drawing conclusions from that.

"You do not need instruments to get into the airport," she said, noting that the weather was good at the time of the crash and that the plane had been cleared for a visual approach.

The Asiana flight originated in Shanghai and was flying to San Francisco from Seoul with 291 passengers and 16 crew members on board. Several large groups of Chinese students were among the passengers.

SERIOUS INTERIOR DAMAGE

People on the flight said nothing seemed amiss until moments before the plane hit the ground. Pictures taken by survivors showed passengers hurrying out of the wrecked plane, some on evacuation slides. Thick smoke billowed from the fuselage and TV footage showed the aircraft gutted and blackened by fire. Much of its roof was gone.

Interior damage to the plane also was extreme, Hersman said on CNN earlier on Sunday.

"You can see the devastation from the outside of the aircraft, the burn-through, the damage to the external fuselage," she said. "But what you can't see is the damage internally. That is really striking."

The NTSB released photos showing the wrecked interior cabin oxygen masks dangling from the ceiling.

The dead were identified as Ye Meng Yuan and Wang Lin Jia, both 16-year-old girls and described as Chinese nationals who are students, Asiana Airlines said. They had been seated at the rear of the aircraft, according to government officials in Seoul and Asiana, and were found outside the airplane.

Hersman said the first crew of emergency workers to arrive at the scene included 23 people in nine vehicles. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said a total of 225 first responders were involved.

"As chaotic as the site was yesterday, I think a number of miracles occurred to save many more lives," Lee said at the airport news conference. Appearing later at San Francisco General Hospital, he declined to address whether one of the Chinese teenagers may have been run over.

The crash was the first fatal accident involving the Boeing 777, a popular long-range jet that has been in service since 1995. It was the first fatal commercial airline accident in the United States since a regional plane operated by Colgan Air crashed in New York in 2009.

"For now, we acknowledge that there were no problems caused by the 777-200 plane or (its) engines," Yoon Young-doo, the president and CEO of the airline, told reporters on Sunday at the company headquarters on the outskirts of Seoul.

Asiana said passengers included 141 Chinese, 77 South Koreans, 64 Americans, three Indians, three Canadians, one French, one Vietnamese and one Japanese citizen.

Asiana, South Korea's junior carrier, has had two other fatal crashes in its 25-year history.

Turning the morning news into soap opera

Ann Curry, the second fiddle on NBC’s Today show, is apparently being shown the door. That news was broken yesterday afternoon by Brian Stelter, the prolific media reporter of the New York Times on the newspaper’s website, and that 1,100-word story earned prominent placement on Page One of the business section of this morning’s paper.

I’ll forgive you in advance if you don’t care whether Curry continues on Today or if you don’t care whether she finds a slot elsewhere in the NBC empire, just as long as you forgive me for not giving a fig either. It’s not that I dislike Ann Curry or Today‘s first fiddle, Matt Lauer, or even Today‘s morning-show competition. It’s just that I dislike the shows for being dulled-down messes of news, entertainment and talk. If I watch any of them, it’s by accident.

My lack of interest in the morning-show mix puts me in the majority. Today, which is usually the number-one-rated program, and ABC’s Good Morning America, which took that position a couple of times this spring, draw an average of fewer than 5 million viewers. The third-ranked show, CBS’s This Morning, pulls in a little more than 2 million viewers. In a country of 311 million, that’s minimal interest.

The length and placement of Stelter’s piece, on the other hand, conveys a level of importance to Curry’s rumored departure that’s hard to justify. Stripped to its essence, the Curry saga might justify a 300-word short about Today‘s recent ratings volatility, Lauer’s alleged estrangement from Curry, and NBC’s judgment that she wasn’t as good a co-host as predecessor Meredith Vieira, all leading to her impending exit.

Instead, Stelter serves an extended story packed with anonymous sources – ”some at NBC,” “some staff members,” “people with knowledge of the negotiations, who insisted on anonymity because the matter was confidential,” “several people who know Ms. Curry,” “one of the people” who know Curry, “friends” of Meredith Vieira, and “one of the people with knowledge of the negotiations” between Curry and NBC – that makes the departure of a TV co-host sound like the final days of Richard Nixon. How much of the anonymous dancing is Curry’s people spinning her story and how much of it is NBC framing the ouster as necessary strategy to save the show is anybody’s guess.

Overdramatizing the comings and goings of on-air talent and the hirings and firings of network executives is a traditional part of the TV beat. The People Who Cover Television never have to worry about material: The TV industry defines itself by ratings, ratings produce winners and losers, and from winners and losers flow an endless river of copy to bottle and sell. The People Who Cover Sports have been doing a similar thing for more than a century. The toughest choice in covering the TV industry (or sports) is to decide whether to make the loser or the winner the day’s story. It’s not that difficult a choice. If you cover the loser today, just remember to put the winner in your calendar for coverage in the future.

A case can be made that the fate of Ann Curry constitutes big news because Today is a $300 million profit machine dependent on ratings for its ad revenues. If ratings drop and she’s to blame, the network’s stockholders must know! But Stelter spends little time there. In the worst tradition of TV coverage, he’s writing a soap opera about a TV show.

I pick on Stelter, but he’s only one of the several dramatizers working the TV beat. His Times colleague Bill Carter has been known to indulge this tendency, and a couple of years ago, critic Bill Wyman took pleasure in hosing Howard Kurtz (Washington Post and the Daily Beast) for his inappropriately thorough pieces on the fading of Katie Couric’s nightly news lights. The extreme coverage of Curry echoes Politico’s coverage of the Washington beat: While the outlet routinely breaks legitimate news, it also tends to inflate whatever political lint it collects into giant mainsails.

At least one newspaper reporter on the TV beat keeps a sense of perspective about her work: Lisa de Moraes of the Washington Post. (Here’s my 2003 appreciation of her work.) With her oeuvre more resembling that of a sports columnist than a sports reporter, de Moraes still delivers as much news about the industry as the writers at the Times – only she doesn’t weigh the beat down with high word counts and Timesian puff. And she’s funny. When CNN’s Lou Dobbs Moneyline was renamed Lou Dobbs Tonight, de Moraes explained that it was “because CNN would not let him rename it “I’m Lou Dobbs, Not Some Darn Islamist.”

With no disrespect to Curry, who is an accomplished reporter, if her impending exit from Today is big news, so is every segment on Entertainment Tonight.

Beat sweetener The Benjamin J. Rhodes edition

If you’ve ever wanted to see a White House staffer dressed in frosting and candy sprinkles like a gourmet cupcake, pull your Saturday, March 16, New York Times out of the recycling pile and read Mark Landler’s adulating “beat sweetener” about Deputy National Security Adviser Benjamin J. Rhodes, “Worldly at 35, and Shaping Obama’s Voice.”

A beat sweetener, as press-watchers know, is an over-the-top slab of journalistic flattery of a potential source calculated to earn a reporter access or continued access. They’re most frequently composed on the White House beat when a new administration arrives in Washington and every Executive Office job turns over, but they can appear any time a reporter is prepared to demean himself by toadying up to a source in exchange for material.

As a beat sweetener, the Rhodes piece excels on so many levels that I’ll bet the subject’s parents have framed and hung the clipping over the family mantel. Landler portrays Rhodes as a young fella with “old man” wisdom; as possessing a “soft voice” that delivers “strong opinions”; as one whose “influence extends beyond what either his title or speechwriting duties suggest”; and as someone who “cares” to the point of “anguish” but is “very realistic.”

The information content of these testimonials, made by both Landler and his sources, is just about zero. We learn that he “channels Mr. Obama on foreign policy,” as if a 35-year-old deputy who writes speeches for the president would have his boss on a leash. His unnamed friends and colleagues attest that he’s “deeply frustrated by a policy [in Syria] that is not working,” as if anyone could be anything but frustrated by a policy that isn’t working. Indeed, in the article’s next sentence, we learn from anonymous “administration officials” that Rhodes “is not alone in his frustration over Syria.”

Drawing liberally from the reporter’s big book of clichés, we learn that Rhodes wrote Obama’s “landmark address” given in Cairo in 2009 and that the upcoming Israel speech he has composed for Obama will assert America’s “unshakable support” for that nation. The salient fact about Rhodes’s landmark address — unmentioned by Landler here — was that it flopped, at least among the locals. According to a Pew survey, confidence in Obama in Muslim countries dropped from 33 percent in 2009 to 24 percent in 2012.

According to Landler, in “many ways” Rhodes was “an improbable choice for his current job at the heart of the national security apparatus.” Improbable? How so? After a couple of paragraphs of biography, in which we learn that Rhodes has an unfinished novel in his drawer (show me a speechwriter who doesn’t have at least one), that he grew up in Manhattan and that he worked briefly on Rudy Giuliani’s 1997 re-election campaign, we’re told that Rhodes toiled for former Representative Lee Hamilton, a “Democratic foreign-policy elder,” and helped him draft the 9/11 Commission report and the Iraq Study Group report. The latter document was “a template for the anti-Iraq war positions taken” by Obama when he was a senator.

Hiring Rhodes — or somebody with his resume — wasn’t an improbable choice. It was entirely predestined. Unnoted in the Times profile are the facts that Rhodes also wrote policy speeches for former Virginia Governor Mark Warner, that other Hamilton aides joined the Obama campaign, and that Rhodes’s wife, Ann Norris, works for Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) on foreign policy and defense issues. For more Rhodes details, see this PR sketch published by his alma mater, Rice University: He studied there with novelist Max Apple, double-majoring in English and political science, and later got an MFA in fiction at New York University, where he also taught writing.

Why pretend Rhodes was an outside shot for the job? Did the Times decide the piece lacked sufficient tension to hold reader interest, and inflated the story with the bogus notion that he’s an accidental West Winger? Your guess is as good as mine.

Sucking up to Rhodes won’t necessarily earn Landler or other journalists covering the White House an automatic scoop. But beat sweeteners aren’t written with anything so crass in mind as scoops. They’re designed to keep the information conveyor lubricated (“source greaser” is another term for the practice) with journalistic goodwill. As someone who is inside the White House decision loop, Rhodes is a much better friend than an enemy.

The long, slow decline of alt-weeklies

Alternative weekly colossus Boston Phoenix cracked and fell yesterday, ceasing publication after 47 years. According to a Phoenix executive quoted in the obituary in today’s Boston Globe, the alternative weekly was losing more than $1 million a year, and a format switch last fall from newsprint to glossy had failed to attract the sort of national advertising it desired.

Once one of the leading alt-weeklies in the nation, the dead paper leaves behind $1.2 million in debt and roughly $500,000 in assets. The fact that its owner didn’t — or couldn’t — sell the publication to cover some of its debt signals the illness of the greater alternative weekly market.

Like its daily newspaper counterpart, the alt-weekly has enjoyed a terrible half-decade of plummeting revenues, circulation and page counts in the 100-plus markets currently served. One large chain that owned papers in Chicago, Washington, Atlanta, Charlotte and elsewhere filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and was eventually spun apart, but that financial disaster was as much about clueless proprietors overleveraging themselves as it was the decay of the alt-weekly business model.

The formula, pioneered by the Village Voice in the 1950s, finessed by the Phoenix in the 1960s and perfected by the Chicago Reader, the Phoenix New Times and others in the 1970s, became such a cinch that know-nothing bar owners and recent college graduates (or dropouts!) eventually made millions off it. Some papers, like the Phoenix New Times, built immense chains from the links they forged and acquired. The formula connected underserved readers with overcharged advertisers in both compact, urban settings like New York and Washington and sunbelt expanses like Phoenix and Dallas. In 2005, the two largest alt-weekly chains, anchored respectively by the Phoenix New Times and the Voice, combined to create a company valued by the participants at $400 million, with annual revenues of $180 million. Newspapers started in bar booths had become big business, but like many of the daily newspaper merger and acquisition deals going down during same period, this deal also proved too rich.

Many former alt-weekly editors would like to persuade you that their cutting take on city politics and the arts combined with their dedication to the feature form won readers. Actually, it was the whole gestalt that made the publications work. Comprehensive listings paired with club and concert ads to both entertain and help readers plan their week. Classified ads, especially the personals, often provided better reading than the journalistic fare in the front of the book. No better venue for apartment rentals existed; even people who had long-term leases used the housing ads to fantasize. Even the display ads, purchased mostly by local retailers and service providers, were useful to readers.

Fashion Trend – Neon

Ever since color blocking came over last summer, neon colors are all over the place. But it didn’t do too well after the take off as it can come off as tacky when not put together well. However this season there are plenty of more sophisticated neon fashion items to choose from. Whether you have a bag fetish or you are a jewelry aficionado neons are the go to colors for this season.

For the uninitiated neon are bright fluorescent colors (the ones you see on highlighters like fluorescent yellow, orange, green, pink and blue). These colours are very luminescent in nature and hence can be worn solid as a base or as an accent depending on your style, personality, the occasion and your body type. Neon is not easy to wear and you need to take effort to put them together. Here are some ideas on how you could incorporate neons into your ward robe.

Neon dresses: Neon T shirts are so passe, neon dresses (knee length or shorter) are the latest trend. The shorter ones can be paired with jeggings or fitted jeans and the longer ones can just be worn as a dress, as is or with a blazer if required. Accessorize with some long chains for a smart look.

Neon Pants: If you have the body type and the attitude to carry it off, then there’s nothing like pairing fitted fluorescent denim with a black/white tank/ Tshirt and a blazer. Accessorize with gladiator styled heels in black/white and you are good to go.

Muted neons: Think neons are too bright for you? Mute them by layering them with a sheer fabric like tulle or lace. Or you could take a cue from Louis Vuitton ads and sport dress with cut work or cut outs in them with neon lining.

Neon accessories: Try your hand at some spring colour blocking by teaming neon shoes with faded pastel clothing. Colourful, oversized clutches are an on-trend choice of accessory. Big totes in neon (esp. green) also do work really well. It is not necessary that all neon bags will be in plastic or coated materials. These days you get neon bags/ clutches made of leather and jute too. But if you like the frosted finish of the water proof bags, then you are in luck, for that is in trend too.

Neon Jewelry: Most big brands in costume jewelry are into neon these days. Big chunky stones in fluorescent green, orange and pink, when put together create quite an impact. Obviously, they are expensive. So the easiest way is to buy white rhinestone jewelry, according to your taste and budget (most local markets and malls stock them) and color them with a few coats of funky nail polish colours. You can even add pieces of neon rope or ribbon to make them look unique. Team such pieces with something simple like a black dress and heels for a truly stunning look.

Don’t like too much of neon, then use it as an accent in your clothes and accessories. A piping here, a patch there is enough to make your clothes look trendy this season. So go on pick up some neon colors and highlight your wardrobe with them.

The Best Homemade Cinnamon Rolls Without Yeast

With the aromatic and tantalizing smell of cinnamon blended with melted brown sugar that hangs in the early morning sunlight, no one in their right minds would say no to a piece of this delectable breakfast treat.

Making cinnamon rolls is relatively easy but making homemade cinnamon rolls without yeast would also be a piece of cake for anyone. Adding yeast to the dough is a bit time consuming as there would be a need to wait for the dough to fully rise and be properly kneaded. Here is a cinnamon roll recipe that you can do from scratch with no yeast included.

Yeast -Free Cinnamon Rolls

    4 tsp. baking powder
1 c. sugar (granulated or brown sugar)
    3 tsp. cinnamon Glaze
    1/2 c. confectioner’s sugar
    1/4 c. milk

Preparation:

In making this homemade cinnamon rolls without yeast, start by preheating the oven to 400 Farenheit In a medium sized bowl, combine the ingredients for the filling. You can opt to use either granulated sugar or brown sugar depending on your personal preference. Once the filling ingredients are mixed, divide into halves. Spread one half of the filling at the bottom of a 9”x9” pan. In separate bowl or container, shift all dry ingredients until well combined. Cut in the butter into the dry ingredients by either using the tines of a fork or just by using your clean and dry hands. Once the butter is mixed, slowly pour the milk into the flour mixture to form a soft dough. On a floured surface, light roll out the dough to a rectangle about 1/4 thick Spread the remaining half of the filling to the dough and roll the dough again until it forms a log. You can now slice your cinnamon rolls by using a knife. If you want bigger portions, slice the rolled up dough into 12 slices and for smaller sizes, you can slice this into 18 slices instead. Bake the cinnamon rolls for around 20 to 25 minutes. While the rolls are baking, combine the ingredients for the glaze.

Some people would prefer a thicker glaze instead of a runny one, try to adjust the amount of powdered sugar in ratio to the milk. Once the rolls are baked, drizzle the glaze on top and serve these warm.

Making this homemade cinnamon rolls without yeast, you can also make some twists to these rolls. Instead of using a glaze on top, others would try other frostings such as cream cheese or even butter cream or use melted butter with sugar for a more rich and flavorful cinnamon roll. For a healthier spin to this recipe, substitute the flour with whole wheat flour and lessen the sugar used.

When is diamond jewelry appropriate

Receiving diamond jewelry is a very memorable event in a woman's life. If you are the one giving her this experience you want to be sure it is a positive one! By asking yourself a few key questions you can be sure the gift giving experience is the one you are looking to achieve.

1. Do you know if she likes diamonds?

Strange as it may seem... some women just don't like diamonds. Perhaps they don't see themselves as the type of woman who wears diamonds or they feel the money is better spent elsewhere. If she hasn't flat out told you her feelings about diamonds, comment on diamonds her friends or relatives are wearing, or even on commercials while watching tv. Lucky for you, the largest percentage of women do still love diamonds and your bet is fairly safe. As a side note, she may not appreciate a diamond if she can not wear it to work due to safety precautions.

2. Are you trying to express feelings of love?

Since the early 1900's diamonds have been known as an expression of undying love. Have you reached the point in your relationship where love is freely expressed? If so, that's a major hurdle or you will be taking a big risk presenting her with diamonds. If you are NOT trying to express feelings of love, it would be a good idea to switch to another gift. If you prefer jewelry, think about giving a birth stone or a piece of jewelry without a gemstone in it.

3. Is the gift giving occasion appropriate?

Diamonds are typically given as gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and for achievements. Once you've decided to give a diamond gift, the next decision is the type of diamond. Most importantly, unless your intent is engagement, do not give a diamond solitaire ring or any ring that resembles an engagement or wedding anniversary ring. In fact, if you are getting to the point in a relationship when an engagement ring could be expected, its best to stay away from any jewelry that comes in a box similar to a ring box. This could be earrings so be wary. A great choice is a diamond bracelet or pendant.

Good luck with your jewelry purchase and creating a memorable gift giving experience. Be sure to price shop and above all, save your receipt and verify the store's return policy!

Choosing jewelry styles for an oblong shaped face

An oblong shaped face is long and thin, with a forehead, cheek and jaw-line that are all similar in width. In general, it's overall shape are very similar to the natural characteristics an oval shape (except it is much longer, narrower and angular). Jewellery pieces can be worn to help accentuate your best features; while shortening the length of your face, and adding more width to create balance.

With a wide variety of styles available, it's important that the jewellery you choose to wear reflect these elements in their shapes and styles (especially with pieces that are worn close to the face).

Necklaces

A necklace is one of the most expressive pieces of jewelry worn.  It can frame the face; draw attention to specific features (depending upon the length, size and style chosen), and accentuate personal style.  With a wide range of styles, shapes, sizes, materials and colours available, wearing a necklace is a great way to complete a look.  Below are a few basic tips to keep in mind when choosing jewellery for an oblong facial shape.

WEAR

Any choker and high collar styles.  They work very well in breaking up the vertical line created by the oblong face; and are the most flattering styles.  The fullness of a choker also helps to balance out your narrow jaw-line.

Princess styles (they are flattering).

AVOID

Opera length or longer necklaces of any style (especially if you have a long neck).

Very small pearl, stones and delicate pieces that tend to lessen the visual weight in your neck area (unless you have a full neck).  They will also accentuate your narrow chin.

Earrings

With so many different shapes and styles of earrings available: ovals, buttons, drop chandeliers, hoops, studs, posts, squares, diamonds, triangles, and hearts (just to name a few) the choices seem to be endless! That's why it's important to choose styles, shapes and sizes that both compliment your facial shape and accentuate your personal style.  Always keep mind that the larger the earrings, the more noticeable they are. Therefore the types of earrings that you choose to wear have a direct impact on your overall appearance.  This could have the potential of bringing out your best features, or pointing out your flaws. Earrings are worn so closely to the face, that they're often considered to be one of the most important accessories. They have the ability to reflect light and flattering colour onto your face. The following are a few suggestions to help.

The best earrings for your face shape

Your face shape largely determines the kinds of earrings that will suit you and those that will not. Some earrings can even help to bring more balance to your face shape. The following is a guide to the best earrings for round, square, long and narrow, oval, diamond and heart shaped faces.

Round

If your face is as wide as it is long and features a rounded chin, the best earrings are long earrings rather than wide earrings. Think narrow drop style earrings. Or alternatively stick to small studs, ideally those in more angular shapes like squares and triangles.

Square

Women with a square face shape are ideally suited to simply studs, or small hoop earrings. Try round diamond studs or pearls. You generally want to avoid drop style earrings as these are likely to draw attention to your square jawline. If you really like drop styles, look for those that may help to soften your strong jawline, for example, feather styles.

Long and narrow

Those with a long and narrow face shape are free to have fun with lots of earring styles as they will help to make their face look shorter and wider. Try oversized or very decorative earrings for the most benefit. For example, try large hoop earrings with decorative beads, or wide style chandelier earrings.

Oval

Oval faces are nicely proportional so you should find that most earring styles will suit you. Just be mindful of styles that are too top or bottom heavy as these may take away from the nice balance of your face.

Diamond

Those with a diamond face shape are widest through the cheeks and taper in quite dramatically at the chin and top of the head. As the ears feature quite predominantly in the same line of sight as the widest point on a diamond's face, it is generally best to keep earrings very low key. Think small studs. Alternatively, look for delicate drop earrings that feature a fine chain and then a more focal bottom. This will add to one of the more narrow points on your face.

Heart shaped

If you have wide cheekbones but a narrow chin, you want to look for earrings that do not add any visual volume to the cheek area. As with a diamond face, you can however select styles that spread out at the chin area as this can make the chin seem less narrow.

The New and Improved Leading Man

Heard all the Hollywood hand-wringing about the death of the movie star? About how the only things that can get people to the box office are comic-book heroes and animated sequels? The people who say this definitely haven't seen Magic Mike or Argo. The thing is, the leading man isn't dead, but he's evolving into something a little more complicated. Mark Harris explains the rules of leading men and tells us who is one (Channing Tatum), who isn't (Taylor Kitsch, at least not yet), and why

The ten highest-grossing movies of 2012 included the following: Three adaptations of young-adult novels. Three adaptations of comic books. Two cartoons. One installment in an action series. And one original, non-franchise, live-action movie that was, technically, aimed at adults.

Nine of the ten movies were, or were intended to generate, sequels. The movie aimed at adults was about a man whose teddy bear talks to him. None of this is news. We're all pretty familiar by now with the not-so-brave, no-longer-so-new world of franchises and the adult children who make them. What's most jolting about this list is what's missing from it: movie stars.

I don't mean that they're literally absent: Recognizable men are cast in lead roles. What's missing is, rather, the value stars bring to a movie—a quality long thought to be one of the most reliable and precious commodities in Hollywood. The twenty-first-century movie business, judging by this list, appears to be one in which Skyfall's Daniel Craig counts for neither more nor less than Twilight's Robert Pattinson or The Hobbit's Martin Freeman. It's a business in which you can get to $200 million or $250 million by hiring Andrew Garfield (for The Amazing Spider-Man) or David Schwimmer (for voice work on Madagascar 3). And notably, it is a business in which you will not get to that top ten on the back of someone like Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt, unless they get there on the back of something like Pirates of the Caribbean 5 or Ocean's Whatever.

It's hard to escape the logical conclusion: Movie stars just don't matter anymore. Financially, sociologically, culturally, they're either obsolete or doing a damn good job of pretending to be. Whether it's because they stopped doing what movie stars are supposed to do or we stopped wanting them to do it, here we all are, apparently, in a post-movie-star universe in which the movies seem to be doing just fine without the presence of an entire category of people who have been, for the better part of the past century, the main reason a lot of people went to the movies. And we shouldn't be surprised. If, in 2013, our primary allegiances are to genres and concepts and properties rather than to people, if our biggest modern movie stars are Batman and Bourne and Wolverine and James Bond, and if the most a flesh-and-blood actor can hope is to be chosen to serve as the temporary avatar for one of those characters, then what meaning can the term movie star possibly have?

Plenty, it turns out. We still need movie stars. And perhaps more surprisingly, we still have movie stars—lots of them, and arguably a more talented and interesting variety than at any time in the past thirty years. But they play by new rules, and they have to navigate an industry that often seems hostile to their very existence.

···

To make sense of the new movie star universe, it may help to acknowledge that the very words movie star now seem like kryptonite to half of Hollywood's A-list (and A-list aspirants). From Johnny Depp, who is, lest there be any doubt, a movie star: "That 'movie star' stuff, I just don't buy it; it just doesn't make sense to me." From Steve Carell, who has worked very hard to try to become a movie star: "I don't think of myself as a movie star... I'm an actor, and I love my job." From Armie Hammer, the star of the hugely expensive big-studio franchise-wannabe The Lone Ranger: "I personally don't see myself...as a movie star."

This may all come under the heading of protesting too much—the way the second somebody says, "I don't consider myself wealthy," you know they're a lot closer to it than you are. But you can't blame actors for running away from a term that reeks of greed and compromise. Ever since the Reagan-era Wall Street boom infected Hollywood with a bigger-is-better aesthetic and box-office performance became a routine part of plugged-in chatter, the industry and the press have welded the idea of stardom to money so completely that it has been dumbed down all the way to the level of elementary-school math. According to Hollywood and its observers, a star is someone who can open a movie.

But to equate stardom with mere bank-ability ruins the fun—unless your definition of fun is long and tortured analytical discussions of whether Tom Cruise is "still a star," even though nobody wanted to see a man that short play Jack Reacher or, for that matter, see a movie titled Jack Reacher. Beyond that, it misses the truth. For one thing, some actors can indeed open movies every single time and yet are not what we think of as movie stars (specialty acts like Tyler Perry and single-niche performers like Jason Statham), just as there are actors whose box-office records may be spotty but whose stardom is indisputable (Pitt, for one). By the numbers, Adam Sandler is a movie star, but only when he makes an Adam Sandler movie. His stardom, like Abbott and Costello's in the 1940s and Burt Reynolds's in the 1970s, is extraordinarily consistent, but also dependent on satisfying rather than challenging the modest expectations of his target audience. When Sandler tried to break those chains, as he did in Punch-Drunk Love and Funny People, he won over critics but lost his base. Stars shouldn't be constrained by the fact that they do one thing well—nor should the designation of movie star be subject to such casual revision every time the grosses roll in. All stars have flops; real stars survive them.

The Legendary Audrey Hepburn

Long before she became an Oscar-winning actress, Audrey Hepburn “…dreamed of only one thing: To be a dancer.” Audrey began her dance training at the age of five while attending boarding school in England. Little Audrey fell in love with ballet and was eager to attend each weekly class.

By the age of ten, Audrey moved from her English boarding school back to her family’s home in Holland where her mother, Ella enrolled her in the Arnhem Conservatory of Music and Dance. It was here that Audrey’s unique blend of artistry began to take shape under the experienced eye of her teacher, Winja Marova. “She was long, slender, very sweet, very eager to learn,” Winja said of Audrey. “She was willing to give everything for it. She was very musical. I always enjoyed teaching her…When she was on stage, even though she just knew a little bit, you immediately saw that a flame lit the audience.” Their respect and admiration was mutual. Of her teacher, Miss Hepburn is quoted as saying, “Winja was a beautiful, world-class dancer. (And she) helped this very young girl in Arnhem to believe that she could become one, too.”

Audrey’s talent was also readily apparent to others. She began receiving several glowing reviews for both performances and recitals. One particular review read: “As all of them are just at the start of their dance development, we do not want to mention any names except for Audrey Hepburn who, in spite of the age of only twelve, was noticed because of her very individual personality and performance. She danced the ‘Serenade’ of Moszkowski with her own choreography.”

Young Audrey was enchanted by the famous Margot Fonteyn, and had the opportunity of a lifetime to watch her idol dance on stage in May of 1940. This night to remember was made even more special when Audrey’s mother had a special taffeta dress fashioned for her daughter. “The reason she got me this, at great expense – we couldn’t afford this kind of thing –was that I was to present a bouquet of flowers at the end of the performance to Ninette de Valois, the director of the company.”

“I remember walking onto the bright stage, with the pretty ballerinas and their costumes. It was my first late night.”

However, things were not all sunshine and roses for Audrey and her family. Due to the growing hostilities inflicted by Hitler and the German army, the Arnhem Conservatory began putting on performances to help raise money to support the Dutch underground. Audrey also performed in secret “black out” performances in private homes with the windows locked and the blinds drawn. Her friend would play the piano, Audrey’s mother made costumes from old curtains, and Audrey happily entertained the audience with her own choreography.  Instead of applause, the audience would offer “silent curtain calls” and pass around a hat. “The money we made helped saboteurs in their work against the Nazis.” The young dancer considered it a privilege to be able to use her training to contribute to a greater good.

However, the Nazi’s were not apt to take any form of resistance lightly. Therefore in 1944, the Nazi’s retaliated against the Dutch by abruptly halting the import of food into Holland. The residents, including Audrey and her family, did what they could to survive by eating nettles and grass, or baking bread made from flower bulbs or peas. Yet even their best efforts did little to battle the effects of starvation.  “During the last winter of the war, we had no food whatsoever,” Audrey said. “I finished the war highly anemic, and asthmatic, and all the things that come with malnutrition.” She even developed a horrible case of edema, which caused her limbs to swell so badly that she had to greatly limit her dancing.

As the war continued to escalate, the Germans began forcing thousands of people from their homes. Audrey’s family continued to do what they could to help, often housing up to forty refugees at a time despite the fact that there was nothing to eat. Audrey herself offered free dance lessons to the girls in order to take their minds off their troubles.

Holland was liberated in 1945, and soon thereafter, Audrey and her mother would move to Amsterdam. Fiercely determined to continue her dance education, Audrey was referred to and subsequently accepted by Sonia Gaskell, a “premiere dance teacher who specialized in avant-garde choreography, modern and jazz dance.” For the next three years, Audrey studied under Sonia, determined not only become a top ballerina, but a great choreographer as well.

Treasury, Fed may investigate Bloomberg News breach

Bloomberg could face federal scrutiny following the media firm’s acknowledgment that its reporters had access to sensitive information about customers’ activities on Bloomberg financial data terminals.

The Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department — Bloomberg clients that have leased numerous terminals for executives and staffers — are considering investigating the extent of Bloomberg reporters’ possible monitoring of their data and terminal use.

A Fed spokesperson, who asked not to be named, told USA TODAY Sunday that the agency had reached out to Bloomberg for information on what happened.

A message seeking comment from Treasury was not immediately returned, although the department was reported to be looking into the situation by The Washington Post and CNBC.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission similarly uses Bloomberg terminals, spokesman Steven Adamske said in an e-mail response Sunday. But Adamske said he could not immediately determine whether the regulatory agency would investigate.

A Securities and Exchange Commission spokesman did not respond to an e-mail request for comment.

“We’ve had no formal inquiries from any regulatory bodies,” Ty Trippet, a Bloomberg spokesman, said Sunday.

The developments came after Bloomberg CEO Daniel Doctoroff wrote on the company’s website Friday that a customer had recently complained about reporters’ access to “limited customer relationship management data” through their use of the Bloomberg Terminal.

Doctoroff’ issued the statement after the New York Post first reported that Goldman Sachs confronted Bloomberg over concerns that Bloomberg reporters were monitoring how employees at the investment bank were using the data terminals.

“Although we have long made limited customer relationship data available to our journalists, we realize this was a mistake,” wrote Doctoroff.

With more than 315,000 subscribers worldwide, the Bloomberg Terminal — the popular electronic system founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg — is a desktop terminal that feeds financial market data, corporate information and staff-produced wire stories to customers who pay about $20,000 a year for the service. The terminals are heavily used by Wall Street traders and other financial industry workers and executives.

Bloomberg reporters had access to information on who logged on to their terminals and the number of times a particular function has been used. The media firm’s reporters used what was known within the company as “the Z function” to access client data. By typing that letter and a company name, they were able to see the list of Bloomberg Terminal subscribers at the firm and their contact information. By drilling down further, reporters could retrieve subscribers’ log-on information and which terminal functions — though not specific stocks or bonds — subscribers used.

Without addressing Goldman’s charges directly, Doctoroff said Bloomberg changed its policy last month so that reporters now have access only to “the same customer relationship data available to our clients.”

Bloomberg reporters never had access to information about trading or investment portfolios, stories read, securities viewed or personal messages sent or received by clients, Doctoroff said.

The company also named Steve Ross, a senior executive, as its new client data compliance officer, responsible for reviewing and establishing protocols “to ensure that our news operations never have access to confidential customer data,” he said.

In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markiewicz

The light of evening, Lissadell,
Great windows open to the south,
Two girls in silk kimonos,both
Beautiful, one a gazelle.
But a raving Autumn shears
Blossom from the Summer's wreath;
The older is condemned to death,
Pardoned, drags out lonely years
Conspiring among the ignorant.
I know not what the younger dreams-
Some vague Utopia-and she seems,
When withered old and skeleton-gaunt,
An image of such politics.
Many a time I think to seek
One or the other out and speak
Of that old Georgian mansion, mix
Pictures of the mind, recall
That table and the talk of youth,
Two girls in silk kimonos, both
Beautiful, one a gazelle.

Dear shadows, now you know it all,
All the folly of a fight
With a common wrong or right.
The innocent and the beautiful
Have no enemy but time;
Arise and bid me strike a match
And strike another till time catch;
Should the conflagration climb,
Run till all the sages know.
We the great gazebo built,
They convicted us of guilt;
Bid me strike a match and blow.

Interesting Facts About Neptune

Neptune is one of the most interesting objects in our solar system. It shares commonalities with its nearest neighbor, Uranus, but is also similar in many ways to the king if the planets, Jupiter. Here we explore some of the facts about this strange blue world.

1. Neptune is the Farthest Planet from the Sun

Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun, and since the demotion of Pluto to Dwarf Planet status, that makes Neptune the most distant planet in our solar system.

2. Neptune is the Only Planet in the Solar System to be Discovered Mathematically

Neptune had been seen through telescopes for years before it was officially identified as a planet. Because it is so far from the Sun it moves very slowly in its orbit, so to us it crawls across the sky. Unless you observe the world consistently for many nights, its motion is not all that dissimilar from the stars. But scientists noticed that something was perturbing the orbit of the planet Uranus, leading them to mathematically predict the location of the new world. That predicted position was confirmed by astronomers shortly afterward.

3. Neptune Has Giant Storms like those on Jupiter

Uranus is the planet most commonly associated the Neptune. This makes sense because of their proximity to each other as well as their similar structure. However, unlike its nearby cousin, Neptune has giant storm vortices like those on the kind of the planets: Jupiter.

4. Neptune has Rings

When we think of planetary rings, we imagine those of Saturn. But in fact all of the outer four planets have rings, though they are much more difficult to see and often require specialized instruments to fully capture.

5. Triton, Neptune's Largest Moon, is a bit Backward

Neptune has 13 moons in total, but most of them are quite small. The largest moon, Triton is quite unique. It is the only moon in the solar system that orbits its host planet backwards. This has lead scientists to believe that the planet was actually captured from the Kuiper belt, instead of forming around the planet.

6. It Takes Neptune about 165 Earth-Years to Orbit the Sun

Because of its distance from the Sun, Neptune moves very slowly around the Sun. So slowly, in fact, that it takes about 165 years on Earth for the blue giant to orbit the Sun once!

Sample Short Horror Story

David turned his head and spat off the front porch. It had been a long day. It was good to be home.

He turned the key, his brain releasing a little squirt of dopamine at the familiar sound of the coming relaxation, and waited on the next of the two sounds he heard every day at 5:30: Scruff banging against the door.

There was no banging, though. No panting, either. Nothing at all to signify to dog even knew he was there. After a decade of driveway-key-door-dog, it was easy to notice the silence. He shouldered the door open, failing to compensate for Scruff’s missing weight, and stumbled over the threshold. More silence.

“David?”

There was a sound he noticed. He hadn’t seen Linda’s car when he pulled in, but he supposed he could have missed it.

“It’s me,” he said, making his way towards the back of the small house they shared. “How are you?”

“Good.” Linda’s voice made him feel a little better. The missing dog still nagged at him. “Where’s Scruff?”

“Down here,” Linda said. “He followed me downstairs to do the laundry.”

David froze with his hand an inch away from the doorknob. Scruff never went downstairs. Heck, Linda never did either, at least not since—

Not since they moved the washing machine upstairs.

“Linda? Are you okay?”

“Yeah.” Her response was quick and sounded unusually defensive.

“You sure?”

“Yes, hon.” A little softer this time, but still not right.

David eased his hand toward the doorknob.

“Can you help me?” Her voice sounded clipped again.  “I have a lot of cl— stuff to carry, and I can’t get to the door.”

You’re being stupid, Davey.

The voice in his head was full of contempt, but he couldn’t shake his fear. Had she just not noticed what she’d said? What else would she be carrying?

“Hon?”

The irritation of having to ask a third time certainly sounded normal. Dave turned the knob and opened the door.

He didn’t have enough time to see exactly what waited on him, but it wasn’t Linda. It absolutely was not Linda.

Red - crowned Crane

Identification:

Red-crowned Cranes are the only crane species that have white primary feathers. Adult forehead and crown are covered with bare red skin, and a large white band extends from behind the eyes and meets sharply with the black lower neck. The majority of the body is pure white with the exception of black secondary and tertiary feathers. Eyes are black and legs are slatey to grayish black. Males and females are virtually indistinguishable, although males tend to be slightly larger in size.

Juveniles are a combination of white, partly tawny, cinnamon brown, and/or grayish plumage. The neck collar is grayish to coffee brown, the secondaries are dull black and brown, and the crown and forehead are covered with gray and tawny feathers. The legs and bill are similar to those of adults, but lighter in color. The primaries are white, tipped with black, as are the upper primary coverts. At two years of age the primaries are replaced with all white feathers.

Habitat & Ecology:

Red-crowned Cranes are highly aquatic cranes with large home ranges. They feed in deeper water than other cranes. They also forage regularly on pasturelands in Japan, and in winter they use coastal salt marshes, rivers, freshwater marshes, rice paddies, and cultivated fields. Red-crowned Cranes prefer to nest in marshes with relatively deep water and standing dead vegetation. Red-crowned Cranes are well adapted to cold temperatures.

Mated pairs of cranes, including Red-crowned Cranes, engage in unison calling, which is a complex and extended series of coordinated calls. The birds stand in a specific posture, usually with their heads thrown back and beaks skyward during the display. The male always lifts up his wings over his back during the unison call while the female keeps her wings folded at her sides. Male Red-crowned Cranes initiate the display and the female utters two calls for each male call. All cranes engage in dancing, which includes various behaviors such as bowing, jumping, running, stick or grass tossing, and wing flapping. Dancing can occur at any age and is commonly associated with courtship; however, it is generally believed to be a normal part of motor development for cranes and can serve to thwart aggression, relieve tension, and strengthen the pair bond. Red-crowned Cranes seem to dance more than other species of cranes.

Nests are built on wet ground or in shallow water. Females usually lay two eggs and incubation (by both sexes) lasts 29-34 days. The male takes the primary role in defending the nest against possible danger. Chicks fledge (first flight) at about 95 days.

Another deadly earthquake in Sichuan: Shaken again

AFTERSHOCKS, landslides, and shortages of relief supplies are hampering rescue efforts in China’s south-western Sichuan province two days after Saturday’s strong earthquake that killed at least 186 people and injured thousands.
State television showed vivid images of rescuers working frantically—some with heavy equipment and others with bare hands—in the stricken area. Most of the damage was centred on Ya’an, a city of 1.5m located 140km (90 miles) south-west of Sichuan’s provincial capital, Chengdu.

The earthquake was of magnitude 7.0, according to Chinese seismology officials, and struck just after 8am Saturday local time. The United States Geological Survey measured its magnitude at 6.6. Its epicentre was just 85 km away from that of a May 2008 earthquake that had a magnitude of 7.9 and a death toll ranging from 70,000-90,000 according to different estimates.

The official Xinhua news agency said that within 38 hours of the main tremor, more than 1,700 aftershocks had struck the area, posing additional threats to damaged structures and to rescue workers.

A main road was reported cleared by Sunday evening, restoring access to affected areas that had been cut off from aid.

Occurring in nearly the same place and at nearly the same time of year, Saturday’s earthquake triggered inevitable comparisons to the 2008 disaster. It has also evoked a similar official response. Like his predecessor in 2008, China’s new prime minister, Li Keqiang, promptly visited the disaster area.

"The current most urgent issue is grasping the first 24 hours after the quake's occurrence, the golden time for saving lives, to take scientific rescue measures and save peoples' lives," Mr Li reportedly said on his plane en route to the area. Officials say that in addition to food and water, they have distributed tens of thousands of tents, beds and quilts.

As in 2008, ordinary citizens have contributed their own efforts to the relief work. State television and foreign media reports say many have been going on their own into the disaster area to donate supplies.

Google, an American internet company, has also provided help, in the form of an online “person finder” tool where people can either seek or provide information about people in the area. The company says it is already tracking about 1,100 records.

An important and controversial element of the aftermath to the 2008 earthquake was the large number of children killed in collapsed school buildings. Parents and activists complained bitterly that corruption was to blame for the fact that school buildings were among the most shoddily built and quick to crumble. Within a year of the 2008 earthquake, officials acknowledged that 5,335 students had been killed or gone missing. Activists claim to have documented thousands of additional cases.

There has yet been little reporting from the Ya’an disaster area about how schools fared in comparison to other buildings. But such reporting is certain to emerge soon, and certain to attract a lot of attention.
